Slovenia is one of the most underrated countries in Europe in my opinion. This guide will show you how to experience Slovenia in just 3 days and while we do recommend to spend a bit more to soak everything in, we are incorporating the essentials and providing you with a complete Slovenia 3 Day Itinerary! While airports and incoming flight times differ, our accompanying guides will help you come to the same starting point. This guide is assuming that you will have 3 full days or thereabouts. I will highlight my route and journey as well so you can get inspired. Let’s get into it.

Slovenia 3 Day Itinerary – Day 0
Yes I am including a day 0. If you have an afternoon/evening flight then you will need to factor in traveling times to said destination. I am including a table of the 3 possible airports which are feasible starting points for Slovenia. The 3 day Itinerary will then be adjusted accordingly. There is no chronological order that it must be completed and depends on your airport of choice.
Available Slovenia Airports
| Airport Name | First Day | Details/Reason |
| Ljubljana | Ljubljana | Obvious Reasons, Already there! |
| Trieste | Bled | Direct bus to Bled, more worth it then stopping in Ljubljana |
| Zagreb | Ljubljana/Bled | You have a choice, but recommend Ljubljana for less travel times. |
The reasons for the choices above are because the train to Bled will stop at a station outside Lake Bled and you will need to catch another bus, while buses take you straight into the heart of Lake Bled. Read our detailed guide on how to get to Lake Bled from Ljubljana, Trieste and Zagreb. According to your choice/ recommendation feel free to chop and change the upcoming order of days.
Day 1 – Ljubljana, The Slovenian Capital
Whether you are treating this as your first day, you have just arrived or you are waking up here it is worth spending a day seeing this unique city. The only way you can cut corners in this guide if your flight arrives in Ljubljana airport before midday. In that case you will be able to squeeze in the essentials of this city and maybe do onward travel to Bled in the evening as well.
Highlights of Ljubljana definitely include the Ljubljana castle where you can get sweeping views of Ljubljana below. The main square, the triple bridge, the dragon bridge are other famous attractions. Spend some time roaming around and exploring the city. The center is very walk-able and not huge. For a detailed guide and more inspiration read our Things to Do in Ljubljana guide.

Day 2 – Lake Bled and Triglav National Park.
Here is where things get a bit hectic to fit in 2 days. You may want to choose some things to cut out especially if you are not spending 2 full days in the Lake Bled area. I would say the optimal time would be 2.5 days in Lake Bled alone. This is what I did to allow myself some time to relax but let’s try and squeeze everything in!
Start your day off by walking a bit around Lake Bled. You do not need to do a full loop but take some time to walk around and have a dip in the lake. Then go on a hike to the Mala Osojnica viewpoint for that postcard view of Lake Bled. Once you are down, you can get a pletna boat to the actual Bled island. If you are up to it, you will also squeeze in Vintgar Gorge in the afternoon for a complete walk heavy day. Here are the timings of what that might look like.
- 8:00 – Wake up/ Breakfast
- 09:00 – Start Mala Osojnica Hike (30mins one way)
- 11:00 – Swim/Boat ride to Bled Island
- 13:00 – Lunch/Rest next the lake
- 15:00 – Vintgar Gorge – Important to book timings and leave 30 minutes before!
- 19:00 – Dinner and Rest

Day 3 – Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s Biggest Lake
Lake Bled is definitely the more famous of lakes in Slovenia but Lake Bohinj is actually the biggest lake. There are plenty of things to do and it is worth waking up a bit early and catch an hour’s bus ride. You can fill up more than a day here but the main attractions are definitely Mount Vogel and Savica waterfall.
For all the details on this check out our things to do in Lake Bohinj post. We recommend starting with the Savica waterfall and then walking back to the base of Mount Vogel funicular.
Heading back to Lake Bled, there is one attraction which I didn’t mention in our day 2 schedule and that is Bled Castle. Whether you are climbing up top for more views or visiting its museum, it is worth squeezing it in this time. If not, then it is time to catch a bus back to Ljubljana for either your flight back home or to spend the 1st day of our Slovenia 3 day itinerary.
My Slovenia 3 Day Itinerary – Route and Flights
Now for how I actually did my route for my Slovenia holiday. It involves a sneaky 3 countries. Yes, I know but I only actually spent 3 days in Slovenia. Since there are no direct flights to Ljubljana from my home country of Malta, I had to think outside the box.
Day 0 – Trieste
I flew into Trieste the Italian city right on the Slovenian border. The flight was extremely cheap around €25 and a further €5 to get into the city from the airport. While I could have caught a train to Ljubljana which were frequent, I decided to go and start my holiday directly in Bled. So, I researched and there was a direct bus to Bled operated by Flixbus at 21:00. This way I spent a day exploring Trieste as well and then caught on the 2hr 30 minute bus ride up to Bled.
If you do have this option, then I recommend it, Trieste is a great city to explore in one day and if the flights are cheaper there then happy days, two birds with one stone!

Day 1 – Lake Bohinj
There is no particular reason why I started with Lake Bohinj first instead of Lake Bled. I think it was on a Friday and was scared that in the weekend the bus schedules will be less frequent. I also didn’t want to clash a lot of traveling at once. After two long hikes up Mount Vogel and Savica waterfall, I arrived back into Bled around 5pm which I had a nice rest and got out for dinner.
Day 2 – Lake Bled Activities and Vintgar Gorge
This was another jam packed day and not easy on the legs. I walked up to the viewpoint and swam a bit in the lake in the morning. After I booked a tour to Vintgar Gorge where I had a nightmare as the shuttle bus was not working but that’s a story for my Vintgar Gorge post and then walked back from the gorge to Bled. I got a bus in the evening at around 6pm and arrived in Ljubljana an hour later.
Day 3 – Ljubljana
Waking up in Ljubljana I had a late breakfast as I was shattered from all the previous walking. Taking the day easy I explored all of Ljubljana had to offer and caught an afternoon train to… Zagreb! Yes, like I already said there are no direct flights from Ljubljana back home so I had to once again find another alternative. With Ljubljana and Zagreb just a short train ride away I just decided to hop on and go visit yet another country.
To top it all off my flight was at 4am so I had to spend a night at Zagreb airport because I couldn’t be bothered spending on accommodation for around 3 hours of sleep.

Further Options to Make it a 4/5/6 Day Itinerary
Slovenia is not just Lake Bled and Ljubljana but its nature is impeccable. If you want to extend your stay I would suggest some day trips from either Lake Bled or Ljubljana and put in half of the days in Ljubljana and the other half in Lake Bled.
Day 4 – Postonja Caves
A fantastic day trip option from Ljubljana is Postonja Caves. This 24,000-meter-long cave system is one of the most famous in Europe, and the underground train ride through its massive chambers feels like stepping into another world. Right nearby you’ll also find Predjama Castle, dramatically built into the side of a cliff. You can easily combine both in a day trip from Ljubljana by bus, car, or guided tour.
Day 5 – Kranjska Gora
If you have more time in Slovenia, head north from Lake Bled to the alpine town of Kranjska Gora. It’s one of the most scenic spots in the Julian Alps and it is the only regret I have from my Slovenia holiday. I decided not to visit because it is a bit tricky to reach by public transport but if you rent a car then I would definitely recommend.
The highlight is Jasna Lake, a crystal-clear mountain lake framed by towering peaks which is perfect for a swim in summer or a peaceful walk around its shores. Kranjska Gora itself is a cozy mountain town with plenty of cafes and budget-friendly restaurants, making it a relaxed way to round out your trip.
Day 6 – More Activities in Lake Bled
There are definitely more activities to do near Lake Bled which I didn’t include in the initial 3 day Slovenia itinerary. There’s loads more adventure in around near lake Bled, whether it is rafting in the Soca Valley, ziplining or toboggan you have plenty to choose from. You can also spread out your things to do in Lake Bled better with an extra day without all the hectic schedule that comes with just a day or two.

Slovenia 3 Day Itinerary Summary and FAQs
I hope that this answers and helps you plan your holiday in Slovenia whether it is an itinerary for 3,4,5 days in Slovenia. You might be wondering how much it all costs for which I did an entire budget breakdown for Lake Bled. Read our other Slovenia guides which will help you executing this itinerary to perfection. Thanks for reading!
Is 3 days in Slovenia enough?
Yes it is enough to see Slovenia’s main highlights at a rush. Consider 4-5 days to really make it work and make the most out of this country.
Can I visit Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj in the same day?
It’s possible, but rushed. Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge fit perfectly into one day, while Lake Bohinj deserves its own day if you want to hike, swim, or take the Vogel cable car.
What is the best time to visit Slovenia?
Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal — warm weather, fewer crowds, and cheaper prices. July and August are the busiest months, especially around Lake Bled. Winter is best if you’re interested in skiing around Kranjska Gora.
Should I stay in Ljubljana or Lake Bled?
Ljubljana makes the best base for a 3-day trip, as it has the main transport links and plenty of accommodation. Lake Bled is also a good option if you want a more relaxed setting, but it’s better suited for longer stays.
