One of the best hikes I got to do during my time in Budapest is this Danube Bend lookout. Having found this completely by accident while scrolling through AllTrails the instructions and path found online was not all that clear. In this guide I will definitely save you hours of research and even money as this route was selling for more than €100 on GetYourGuide.

There are loads of panoramic views but the absolute best one is Predikálószék lookout, hands down. Why? It is right on top of the river bend and you can see both right and left. It is however challenging and not as easily accessible. There are more than 1 way you can approach this and trying to figure it all out can be tricky. I have combined this with a visit to Szentendre first so you can easily do this and go somewhere else with the rest of your day.

How to Get to the Starting Point

To get to the best Danube Bend lookout, you will need to start your hike in the small riverside village of Dömös, located right alongside the Danube Bend. There are a couple of ways to get here from Budapest depending on whether you want the fastest or the most scenic route. It also depends on whether you combine it with another village that of Szentendre or Visegrad.

The bus mentioned below is route 880 and is best found via google maps or the Budapest Go website. For some reason I had trouble finding it when writing this blog post stating that there are no buses from Budapest to Domos, but I can assure you there is. Check out bus 880 full timetable and it is approximately every hour

Option 1: Fastest Via Visegrad

The fastest way to get here is via train + bus and this method you combine it with the village of Visegrad. You will get a train to Nagymaros-Visegrád taking approximately 1 hour. Then walk 2 minutes to the ferry pier catching a ferry across to the main village of Visegrad and get a 15 minute bus to Domos.

The bus is the same one which comes from option 2. Read below for the bus details and bus station you need to get off at.

Option 2: Take A Bus Via Szentendre

This was the route that I opted to go for as I preferred to visit the more charming town of Szentendre You can read about this on my other blog post on how I spent less than €10 for a day trip from Budapest! I got to Szentendre via the H5 train but you can actually get the same bus all throughout this route as it leaves from Budapest and stops at Szentendre, Visegrad, Domos and goes all the way to Eztergom.

To get to Dömös from Szentendre, take the same regional bus for around 40 minutes from next to the train station.

Option 3: Direct Bus all the way to Domos

If you’re up for an early start, you can stop in Szentendre before or after the hike. It’s a charming riverside town full of cobbled streets, colorful buildings, art galleries, and cheap lángos.

To get to Dömös from Szentendre, take a regional bus (30–40 mins), or hop on a summer boat along the Danube which is the more fun and scenic option.

The Hike: Dömös to Predikálószék Lookout

I found this hike by accident but once I saw images of the great views at the top, then I knew I had to see it for myself. I also wanted to challenge myself to do a longer hike than what I usually do.

Hike Details

Distance: ~11km round trip
Time: ~3 hours total (2 up, 1 down)
Elevation gain: ~500 meters
Difficulty: Moderate – Steep in parts

Starting Point

The trail starts right on the edge of Dömös. The best bus station to stop at is called Domos,Templom. From there head past the CBA minimarket which is a great place to stock up on water and snacks to take up with you to the Danube Bend Lookout. Unfortunately, I did this hike on a Sunday and the shop was closed. Thankfully there was a bar, which was open in which I bought water from there. Other than those 2 places the starting point doesn’t really have much else to shop around so your safest bet is to bring water with you.

This is the first indication you are at the starting point. I followed the red striped trail to take you to the Danube Bend Lookout. Otherwise other trails take you to other places which are still worth visiting if you wish but it would be a completely different path. The map I posted above shows which trail takes you where.

Section 1: Forest Walk

The hike begins gently, winding through shady forest paths with the occasional sound of the Danube below. Don’t be fooled though as this peaceful start doesn’t last long. The first fork in the path comes after the first clearing where you will either turn left up a steep hill or continue straight. You will need to follow the red triangle trail. As straight on will leave you to another hike which you unfortunately can’t combine.

Section 2: Steep Uphill Climb

This part is where you will start doubting if you are going to still be alive after this hike. I started cursing myself with every step and wondering why I didnt choose an easier viewpoint. You’ll tackle switchbacks and tree roots as you climb steadily uphill. I took plenty of breaks mostly to assess the best path forward. I may be exagerating a bit but you definitely need to be of a good fitness level to tackle this bit as there are a few rocks and handholds, but nothing that with will and some careful steps won’t handle.

This section passes Vadálló-kövek, a series of jagged rock formations and this is definitely the trickiest bit. Once you’re past here then it gets easier as the terrain evens out before the main lookout.

Your indication that you will start doubting yourself is on this sign. I paused and got out google translate on my phone. This roughly translates to: “Stick to the path as people died on this trek and other unfortunate accidents”

So, with a freshly cheerful onlook on my life, I marched on determined to not be another accident and to enjoy the views the best Danbube Bend lookout has to offer!

Section 3: Final Stretch to the Lookout

After navigating the stones, then things get easier. The path gets slightly easier and is the final stretch to the finish. Right after the stones you are rewarded with the first glimpses of the Danube as well as stretched mountainside forests as far as the eye can see. Confident that the worst is now behind me I made my way to around 20 minutes of slightly uphill terrain to reach the Predikálószék Lookout.

Views from hike to predikaloszek lookout

The Predikálószék Lookout

After an hour and a half of careful navigation and climbing I welcome the sight awaiting me at the top. I was greeted with a wooden lookout tower offering one of the best views in Hungary. The hike is rewarded by having to climb three flights of stairs but it is all worth it. You will have the best unobstructed views of the Danube Bend around the hills below.

The panoramic lookout is free to access and includes information as well as a drawn up map of the views of Visegrád Castle, Nagymaros, and the Börzsöny Mountains in the distance. Right outside of the tower there is a sort of hanging rock which is the perfect photo spot. There are also plenty of benches so crack open a snack and take your time here to soak in the views. Personally I spent around half an hour to unwind before starting to think about my journey back to Budapest.

Getting Back to Budapest

Most people return the same way they came but with my Air Forces there was no way I was equipped with proper boots to have the grip to navigate that steep descent. If you have the proper hiking boots then it’s faster going downhill back the way you came from and takes about an hour. I would still proceed with caution though because as highlighted in the previous section the angle of elevation can get high as 60%.

There is another option, one which I decided to take. Following this AllTrails trail, I made my way the opposite way of the lookout and started following a trail with white flag and a red cross on it. However once you reach around 2/3 of the way there keep your phone ready to follow the trail as there is a hidden path on your left through some trees. It is not clear at all and I had to circle back after continuing the obvious looking path which would have set me back around another hour.

Follow this marking to Domos till you find a path on your left

Going at a steady pace the walk back took me a bit more than 1 hour. I had to pace myself quickly as I wanted to catch the upcoming bus instead of waiting for the next one which won’t come for another hour. I am realizing as I write this there are a lot of 1 hour time periods but it is truly the way it is. There isn’t much else to do in Domos so I would say to time that bus well!

If you still have the energy then before going straight to Budapest you can stop by in Visegrad and hike to the castle for another viewpoint.

Final Tips To Hike the Danube Bend Lookout

  • Wear proper shoes – the trail gets rocky and steep
  • Bring water and snacks – there are no shops on the trail itself
  • Offline maps help – I used AllTrails, but the Hungarian trail signs up the trail are great
  • Start early – especially if you want to combine it with Szentendre or avoid hiking in the midday sun
  • Avoid rainy days – the trail gets slippery, and the view might be fogged out
  • Solo-hiker friendly – it’s popular but not overcrowded. I met a few people on the way, which felt safe

Final Thoughts

Predikálószék is easily one of the best hikes near Budapest and a great way to experience Hungary’s natural beauty for free. While I was definitely contemplating my life it is definitely worth it. The sense of achievement once at the top is great and no amount of words can do the view from the top justice.

Whether you are dedicating a day of hiking or having a brief cultural stop in Szentendre, I would definitely recommend putting this viewpoint at the top of your list of things to do during your visit in Budapest! Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Prédikálószék route and how much time should I allow?
Common loop/routes range from about 7–20 km depending on start/end points. Typical hiking times posted by users are ~3–6 hours; most day hikes take ~4–5 hours including stops.
How do I get to Prédikálószék from Budapest or Dömös by public transport?
From Budapest take the HÉV/train toward Szentendre then change to a regional bus to Dömös (services such as 880/889 on some timetables). From Dömös follow the signposted trailheads into the Rám-szakadék / Vadálló-kő area.
Can I combine Rám-szakadék gorge and Prédikálószék in one day?
Yes — many hikers do a loop linking Rám-szakadék → Vadálló-kövek → Prédikálószék. It’s a long, varied day with technical sections; start early and allow 5–7+ hours depending on route and pace.
Is there parking near the trailhead and are trails waymarked?
There is limited parking in Dömös (town/near the church and official lots). Trails are generally waymarked but some final climbs are steep and less clearly trodden — follow official marks and use GPX/guide notes if uncertain.
