Greece is simply a must visit in summer. While you may be drawn to the Mykonos and Santorinis of the Greek islands, we focus more on our Greece on a Budget travel guide! Greece is a country of endless islands, ancient ruins and bright blue seas, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to experience it. There are plenty of alternatives for you to enjoy the summer weather and this country’s deep history. Whether you’re wandering through Athens’ old neighbourhoods, hopping across the Saronic Gulf or exploring lesser‑known islands, this guide gathers all of our budget‑friendly Greece posts in one place.
Best Time to Visit & Must‑Knows
To keep costs down, I recommend to avoid the high‑season rush (late June through August) as this is when accommodation and ferry prices skyrocket. Shoulder seasons which are May to June and September to October offer warm weather, fewer crowds and more affordable rates. This is when I visited Greece and the weather was perfect and the crowds although not insignificant, I found the ferries to be half empty.
If you’re flexible, the winter low season (November through March) is the cheapest time to fly to Greece, though some island services shut down. Opt for under‑the‑radar islands like Andros, Tinos or Corfu to save even more. Book ferries and rooms in advance, use public buses instead of taxis and eat where locals eat – tavernas, bakeries and street food stalls are cheaper and often tastier.
Athens & Mainland Greece
Athens is an essential stop on any budget Greece trip. For my trip I based myself in Athens. Below you can read my Athens 3 Day Itinerary. In this guide I explain how to make the most out of a Greek holiday without spending a fortune. I was tempted to venture out to Santorini or Mykonos but since I was traveling alone I found that ferries costs as well as the accommodation were simply not worth it. Instead I focused on the capital and ventured out to some nearby islands.
I cover the city’s highlights, from the Acropolis and Ancient Agora to neighbourhoods like Plaka and Monastiraki. It includes tips on free viewpoints, cheap eats and walking routes as well as ideas for day trips from Athens.

Saronic Islands Day Trips: Poros & Hydra
Like I mentioned in the intro if you’re based in Athens, you don’t need to spend hundreds to go and make an island getaway. Two easy and affordable day trips are Poros and Hydra, both reached by ferry in under two hours. This also depends whether or not you choose to go via normal ferry or a fast service. For a day trip I opted for fast ferries but you can read more on the specific details about each of these islands below.
Poros and Hydra offer a bit of everything you can wish to do on a greek island mostly the iconic pastel white buildings, a bit of hiking, coastal views and of course the beautiful clean sea with sandy beaches where you can relax and get lost fully in your Greek holiday.

Food & Drink in Greece
Greek food is a highlight of any trip, and it’s surprisingly affordable if you skip the tourist traps. Local tavernas are your best bet as you can feast on grilled souvlaki, moussaka, and fresh salads for under €10. Portions are generous, so sharing dishes is common and helps stretch your budget further. Street food like gyros or spanakopita (spinach pie) makes for a quick, cheap meal, while bakeries serve delicious tiropita (cheese pies) for breakfast. Those gyros are more than a snack but a part of the culture and you shouldn’t leave Greece without one.
More Famous Greek Islands
If you are looking for inspiration these group of islands are combined into one holiday. However going to more than one area on a trip is ambitious and can become quite expensive as a consequence. Here are some of the famous group of islands.
Cyclades Islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos):
These are the poster children of Greek island life /whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, and unreal sunsets. Santorini is famous for its caldera views and cliffside villages, while Mykonos offers lively nightlife and trendy beach clubs. If you are looking for quieter alternatives than Paros and Naxos are more relaxed and affordable options, with quieter beaches and authentic local charm.
Ionian Islands (Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia)
Lush, green, and distinctly different from the Cyclades, the Ionian Islands sit on Greece’s west coast. Corfu mixes Venetian history with laid-back beach vibes, Zakynthos is home to the world-famous Navagio “Shipwreck” Beach, and Kefalonia is ideal for road-trippers seeking hidden coves. Corfu can also offer an entry to cross into Albania, a way to combine 2 countries in one trip.
Dodecanese Islands (Rhodes, Kos, Symi)
Closer to Turkey, these islands blend ancient ruins with scenic harbours. Rhodes stands out for its medieval old town, Kos is a budget-friendly beach destination, and Symi charms with pastel-coloured mansions by the sea.
