If you are planning a trip to southern Thailand, there is a good chance you will eventually end up comparing Krabi vs Phuket. This is because they are both similar but different. I ended up going both but you may opt to choose one over the other due to time constraints in your Thailand itinerary or you spent more time in northern Thailand for instance.

Phuket is much bigger, busier and more developed. There are more beaches, restaurants, resorts, shopping centres and considerably more nightlife. Krabi feels smaller and more relaxed, with dramatic limestone cliffs, longtail boats and some of the most impressive scenery I saw in southern Thailand.

I visited both on the same Thailand trip and personally preferred Krabi. Phuket was also great, but it felt considerably more developed and some of the popular areas were very busy. Krabi still gets plenty of tourists, especially around Ao Nang and Railay, but I enjoyed the overall atmosphere and things to do much more.

Having said that keep reading for a full comparison so you can make an informed choice on which you prefer whether it is Krabi or Phuket. In this guide I’ll compare all the practical information of both, day trips and things to do from Krabi and Phuket.

Before getting into the details, this is roughly how I would compare the two destinations.

One important clarification before going any further. When I refer to Krabi throughout this post, I am mainly talking about Ao Nang and Railay. The same goes for Phuket. Phuket is huge and I am mainly going to refer to the Patong Beach area

Krabi is actually an entire province and includes Krabi Town, Ao Nang, Railay, islands and several quieter coastal areas. For most first-time visitors, Ao Nang is the main equivalent to Phuket’s beach resorts and makes the easiest base.

Krabi vs Phuket: What Is the Main Difference?

The easiest way I can describe the difference is that Phuket feels like a complete resort destination while Krabi feels more focused around nature and excursions.

Phuket is huge compared with Ao Nang. You can stay around Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala or Phuket Old Town and have completely different experiences without even leaving the island.

Patong alone has shopping centres, hundreds of restaurants, beaches, clubs and the famous Bangla Road.

Ao Nang has everything most tourists need, including restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and tour agencies, but it is considerably smaller. You take a longtail boat to Railay, spend a day around the Hong Islands, climb Tiger Cave Temple or travel inland towards Emerald Pool.

Phuket has more happening within Phuket itself. Krabi is a better base for exploring the scenery surrounding it.

If you want to see everything you can do around Krabi, read my complete guide to the best things to do in Krabi.

Krabi vs Phuket for Beaches

Beaches are probably one of the main reasons you are considering either destination in the first place. Both have excellent beaches, but they offer them in very different ways.

Beaches in Phuket

One of Phuket’s biggest advantages is how many beaches you can reach directly by road.

Some of the most popular include:

  • Patong Beach
  • Kata Beach
  • Karon Beach
  • Kamala Beach
  • Freedom Beach
  • Nai Harn Beach
  • Bang Tao Beach

You can simply stay beside one of them and walk down to the beach whenever you want.

This makes Phuket particularly easy if your idea of a Thailand holiday is spending most of the day relaxing on the beach and heading for dinner and drinks in the evening.

Patong Beach itself was not one of my favourite beaches in Thailand. It was incredibly convenient, but it was also busy and very developed. Instead I would recommend Freedom beach and go early to find a good spot before it gets crowded

Beaches in Phuket vs Krabi

Beaches in Krabi

Krabi is slightly more complicated.

Ao Nang Beach is perfectly fine, especially around sunset, but I would not travel all the way to Krabi specifically for Ao Nang Beach.

The impressive beaches are around Railay and the offshore islands. Railay West is surrounded by huge limestone cliffs and is only accessible by boat.

A short walk takes you across the peninsula towards Phra Nang Cave Beach, which was one of my favourite beaches around Krabi.

You then have day trips towards places such as the Hong Islands, Koh Poda and the Four Islands.

This means Krabi’s best beaches usually require a little more effort. You cannot necessarily walk out of your Ao Nang hotel and immediately be on the best beach in the area.

Krabi vs Phuket for Scenery and Nature

This is probably the main reason I preferred Krabi.

The limestone cliffs dominate the landscape around Railay and Ao Nang, while smaller islands rise directly out of the Andaman Sea.

It just feels much more dramatic. Some of the best natural attractions around Krabi include:

  • Railay Beach
  • Phra Nang Cave Beach
  • Hong Islands
  • Emerald Pool
  • Dragon Crest Mountain
  • Krabi’s mangroves
  • Tiger Cave Temple

Things to Do in Krabi vs Phuket

Phuket probably has more things to do overall, while Krabi is a bit more day trippy meaning you need to spend a whole day somewhere else.

Things to Do in Phuket

Some of the main things to do include:

  • Relaxing on Patong, Kata or Karon Beach
  • Exploring Phuket Old Town
  • Visiting Wat Chalong
  • Seeing Phuket’s viewpoints
  • Taking a Phang Nga Bay tour
  • Visiting James Bond Island
  • Shopping
  • Visiting night markets
  • Exploring the nightlife around Patong

Phuket Old Town is particularly worth visiting because it offers something completely different from the beach resort areas.

The colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, cafés and restaurants make it an easy half-day away from the beaches.

Phuket also works extremely well if the weather is bad.

There are shopping centres, cafés, restaurants and plenty of indoor places where you can waste a few hours if an island tour gets cancelled.

Things to Do in Krabi

Krabi is much more focused on nature.

Some of my favourites include:

  • Railay Beach
  • Phra Nang Cave Beach
  • Tiger Cave Temple
  • Emerald Pool
  • Hong Islands
  • Four Islands Tour
  • Rock climbing
  • Dragon Crest Mountain
  • Kayaking through mangroves
  • Exploring Krabi Town

For a full list, read my Things to do in Krabi post

You have to climb around 1,260 incredibly steep steps to reach the summit, but the view across Krabi’s limestone landscape makes the pain slightly more worthwhile.

If you enjoy hiking, kayaking and boat trips, I think Krabi gives you more interesting options. If you want a destination where there is always something happening without needing to book another tour, Phuket is better.

Railay beach

Krabi vs Phuket for Island Hopping

This is one category where both destinations are excellent. Being that they are on opposite side peninsulas most islands are between them so they are equal distance from both Krabi and Phuket. What I would say is that day tours from Krabi leave right from Ao Nang while you need to drive to Rasseda Pier in Phuket

You can visit the Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay from both Phuket and Krabi. Although I would say that you should spend a night on Phi Phi Islands so that you can avoid the crowds at Maya Bay

Island Trips From Phuket

Phuket is particularly convenient for:

  • Phi Phi Islands
  • Maya Bay
  • Phang Nga Bay
  • James Bond Island
  • Similan Islands
  • Coral Island

Island Trips From Krabi

Krabi gives you easy access to:

  • Hong Islands
  • Four Islands
  • Railay
  • Phi Phi Islands
  • Maya Bay
  • Koh Lanta

If I only had time for one Krabi island tour, I would probably choose the Hong Islands or Four Islands.

Powered by GetYourGuide

That is because I do not particularly recommend visiting Phi Phi as a rushed excursion from either destination.

I spent two nights there and it meant I could climb the viewpoints at sunset, experience the nightlife and leave for Maya Bay early in the morning before most of the Phuket and Krabi day tours arrived.

You can read more about this in my things to do in Phi Phi Islands guide and my complete guide on how to visit Maya Bay.

Things to do in Phi phi island - Viewpoint 2

Phuket vs Krabi for Nightlife

This is probably the easiest comparison in the entire article.

If nightlife is important to you, choose Phuket.

Patong is one of Thailand’s biggest nightlife areas and Bangla Road becomes completely different after sunset. There are bars, clubs, live music venues and people trying to convince you to enter something every few metres.

Ao Nang has bars and places to drink, so you definitely won’t be sitting in your hotel room every evening. However, it is nowhere near Phuket.

So if you are travelling with friends and want beaches during the day followed by clubs at night, Phuket makes much more sense.

Krabi vs Phuket for Restaurants and Food

Phuket also has the advantage here simply because it is so much bigger.

You can find almost everything. There are inexpensive Thai restaurants, night markets, seafood restaurants, western chains, cafés, rooftop restaurants and more expensive dining options. Phuket Old Town also has an excellent food scene.

Krabi still has plenty of choice around Ao Nang. You are not going to struggle to find somewhere to eat. There are Thai restaurants, Indian food, western food, seafood restaurants and plenty of small cafés.

Krabi Town is another good option if you want cheaper local food and markets.

The difference is variety. If food and restaurants are a major part of your holiday, Phuket gives you significantly more choice.

Which Is Cheaper: Krabi or Phuket?

Generally, I found Krabi better for travelling on a budget, although your actual spending will depend heavily on where you stay.

We actually stayed at a nice resort in Krabi with our private pool in our room with an amazing view. I booked it at a fraction of the cost for similar room in Phuket.

Accommodation around popular Phuket beaches can become expensive during peak season and transport is another major factor.

If you want to move between Patong, Kata, Karon, Phuket Old Town and other attractions, you can end up spending quite a lot on taxis or Grab.

Once you stay in Ao Nang, you can walk to plenty of restaurants and shops while shared longtail boats can take you towards Railay.

Krabi Town is even cheaper, although I would not necessarily stay there simply to save money if most of your plans involve beaches.

Tours in both destinations can become expensive, particularly once you start adding national park fees and speedboats.

Phi Phi and Maya Bay tours are not going to become cheaper because you chose Krabi instead of Phuket.

For more information about overall costs around the country, read my Thailand on a Budget Travel Guide.

Getting Around Krabi vs Phuket

This is something I think people underestimate when comparing the two. Phuket is bigger than the Ao Nang area.

Getting Around Phuket

If you stay in Patong and want to regularly visit Old Town, Kata, Karon and the southern part of Phuket, you are going to spend a noticeable amount of time travelling.

Renting a scooter gives you more freedom, but only do this if you are legally allowed to drive one, have suitable insurance and actually know how to ride. Otherwise, taxis and app-based rides are the easiest option.

Getting Around Krabi

Ao Nang itself is much easier. You can walk between most restaurants, shops and the beachfront without worrying about transport.

The problem is that many of Krabi’s best attractions are not actually in Ao Nang. To get to Railay beach requires a boat.

So while Krabi feels smaller and easier, you still need transport to see the best parts.

Krabi vs Phuket: Which Is Easier to Reach?

Phuket has the advantage if you are arriving internationally.

Phuket International Airport has a much larger selection of international connections and is one of Thailand’s major tourist gateways. Depending on where you are travelling from, you may be able to fly directly into Phuket without going through Bangkok.

Krabi also has its own international airport.

It is extremely convenient if you are staying around Ao Nang or Krabi Town, but there are fewer international connections. Both airports work perfectly well if you are already travelling within Thailand.

How to Get From Phuket to Krabi

You do not necessarily have to choose between them.

Phuket and Krabi can easily be included in the same Thailand itinerary.

The main options are:

  • Bus or minivan
  • Private road transfer
  • Ferry
  • Speedboat
  • Travelling via Phi Phi Islands

If you are already planning on visiting Phi Phi, I think this creates the best route. It is how I planned my Thailand itinerary. We flew into Phuket, spent couple of days there and then went ahead and traveled to the Phi Phi Islands, before spending 2 nights there and finally ending with Krabi.

Should You Visit Both Phuket and Krabi?

If you have enough time, yes.

I would not necessarily travel all the way to Thailand and spend only one night in each place just to say you visited both.

If you only have five or six days in southern Thailand, choosing one destination and adding Phi Phi or another island probably makes more sense.

If you have around 8 days in southern Thailand, you can comfortably include both. Something like this works really well:

3 nights Phuket → 2 nights Phi Phi → 3 nights Krabi

If you are travelling around Thailand for two weeks, this route can easily be combined with Bangkok and Chiang Mai beforehand.

How Many Days Do You Need in Krabi and Phuket?

For Phuket, I think two to three full days is enough for most people unless you specifically want a resort holiday.

You can use one day for Phuket itself, one for the beaches and another for a Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island excursion.

If nightlife and beaches are your priority, you can easily stay longer.

For Krabi, I would give yourself at least three days.

  • One day for Railay and Phra Nang.
  • One day for Tiger Cave Temple and Emerald Pool.
  • One day for an island excursion such as Hong Islands.

I go into considerably more detail about planning those days in my Krabi travel guide.

Emerald Pool Thailand - things to do in krabi

Krabi or Phuket for Couples?

I would lean towards Krabi.

Railay, Phra Nang and the surrounding islands make it an excellent destination for couples, particularly if you want scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere.

You can also spend a night in Railay rather than simply visiting during the day.

Phuket works equally well if you want more luxurious resorts, restaurants and nightlife.

For a honeymoon where the hotel itself is a major part of the experience, Phuket actually gives you a much larger selection.

Krabi or Phuket for Families?

Phuket is probably easier for families.

There are more large resorts, more restaurants, easier access to road-connected beaches and considerably more things to do if the weather turns bad.

You can stay somewhere like Kata or Karon and avoid the craziness of Patong altogether.

Krabi still works well for families, particularly around Ao Nang.

However, remember that many of the best activities involve boats, which may become less convenient with very young children.

Krabi or Phuket for Solo Travellers?

I would happily recommend either.

Phuket has more hostels, nightlife and opportunities to meet people if you are travelling alone and want a social trip.

Krabi also has plenty of backpackers around Ao Nang and Railay.

Personally, I think Krabi is more interesting for an active solo traveller because there are so many day trips and activities you can easily join without needing your own group.

Krabi or Phuket for Backpackers?

I would choose Krabi.

Ao Nang has inexpensive accommodation, plenty of cheap restaurants and easy access to shared excursions.

Railay and Tonsai are also popular with climbers and backpackers.

Phuket can absolutely be done cheaply, but transport and accommodation around the most popular beaches can quickly increase the cost.

Krabi or Phuket for Nightlife?

Phuket. Not even particularly close.

If going out is one of the main reasons for your trip, stay near Patong.

Ao Nang has enough nightlife for a few drinks, but you are not going to get anything comparable to Bangla Road.

Krabi or Phuket nightlife fire show

Krabi or Phuket for Adventure?

Krabi.

You have rock climbing around Railay, kayaking, island hopping, Dragon Crest Mountain and the brutal climb to Tiger Cave Temple.

Phuket offers plenty of tours and water activities, but Krabi feels much more geared towards outdoor exploration.

Where to Stay in Phuket

Where you stay in Phuket makes an enormous difference.

Patong – Best for Nightlife

Stay here if you want Bangla Road, restaurants and nightlife within walking distance.

It is busy and very touristy.

If that sounds terrible to you, do not stay in Patong just because it is the most famous area.

Kata or Karon – Best All-Round Choice

Both give you access to good beaches while being calmer than Patong.

I would look here if you want a normal beach holiday without completely isolating yourself from restaurants and things to do.

Phuket Old Town – Best for Culture and Food

Phuket Old Town is worth visiting but I personally would not use it as my main base if the beaches are the main reason for your trip.

You are staying inland and will need transport whenever you want to reach the coast.

Where to Stay in Krabi

Ao Nang – Best Overall

This is where I would stay for a first visit.

You have restaurants, bars, tour agencies, accommodation and longtail boats towards Railay all within a compact area. It isn’t the most beautiful part of Krabi, but it is easily the most convenient base.

Railay – Best for Scenery

If waking up surrounded by limestone cliffs sounds better than convenience, stay in Railay.

The disadvantage is that there are no roads. Every time you want to leave towards Ao Nang, the airport or an inland attraction, you need a boat first.

Krabi Town – Best for Budget Travellers

Krabi Town feels considerably more local and accommodation is generally cheaper.

However, there is no beach. I would only stay here if keeping costs low is particularly important or you are mainly interested in the inland attractions.

Krabi vs Phuket: Which One Should You Choose?

After visiting both, I would personally choose Krabi.

I preferred the scenery, Railay was one of my favourite places in southern Thailand and there were more activities that interested me.

Ao Nang also felt much easier to use as a base.

That does not mean I think everyone should skip Phuket.

Choose Phuket if you want:

  • Better nightlife
  • More restaurants
  • More resorts
  • Shopping
  • Lots of road-accessible beaches
  • Better international flight connections
  • More things happening in the evening
  • A larger destination with more choice

Choose Krabi if you want:

  • Limestone scenery
  • Railay Beach
  • Island hopping
  • Hiking and outdoor activities
  • A smaller base
  • A more relaxed atmosphere
  • Easier budget travel
  • Nature rather than shopping and nightlife

My least favourite part of Phuket was simply how developed and busy some areas felt. My favourite part was the nightlife and the convenience.

Krabi is almost the opposite.

The actual town of Ao Nang has less going on, but once you start taking boats and exploring the surrounding area, I think it becomes much more interesting.

If you have time I sincerely would recommend doing both. What I would definitely recommend that if you visit either Phuket or Krabi is that you go and visit the Phi Phi Islands.
