A Mons Klint day trip is one of the best ways to escape Copenhagen and see a completely different side of Denmark. While most of the country is famously flat, Møns Klint has huge white chalk cliffs rising above the Baltic Sea, surrounded by dense forest and plenty of hiking trails. Møns Klint was also added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025, mainly because of its unique geology and landscape.

It is around two hours from Copenhagen by car, making it possible to visit in a single day. Driving is definitely the easiest option, but public transport is also possible during most of the tourist season albeit more complicated. If you do not want to deal with either, there are organised tours from Copenhagen as well.

This guide covers how to get to Møns Klint, parking costs, public transport, the different hiking trails, the best viewpoints and everything else you need to know before visiting.

Møns Klint Day Trip: Quick Information

  • Distance from Copenhagen: Around 140–150 km
  • Driving time: Around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours
  • Entrance to Møns Klint: Free
  • Main car park: DKK 45
  • GeoCenter adult ticket: DKK 155
  • GeoCenter child ticket: DKK 100 for ages 3–11
  • Recommended time at Møns Klint: Around 4–6 hours
  • Fossil Route: Around 2.3 km
  • Biodiversity Route: 6.1 km
  • Klintekongens Rige: 14.5 km

One important thing to know is that you do not need to pay to visit the actual cliffs. The hiking trails, viewpoints, forest and beach are free to explore.

The paid attraction is GeoCenter Møns Klint, an indoor visitor centre which explains the geology and history of the cliffs. You can visit Møns Klint without ever going inside.

How to Get to Møns Klint From Copenhagen

There are three realistic ways of doing a Møns Klint day trip from Copenhagen: driving, taking public transport or joining an organised tour.

Driving From Copenhagen to Møns Klint

Driving is easily the most convenient option and is what we did. The journey normally takes around 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

If you are coming from Copenhagen, you will travel south from the city along the E47/E55 before leaving the motorway and continuing towards the island of Møn.

Once you reach Møn, the drive becomes much more scenic, particularly after crossing Dronning Alexandrines Bridge. From here you continue across the island through small villages, fields and countryside until reaching Møns Klint.

Use the following when driving to Mons Klint it will take you directly to the parking area.

GeoCenter Møns Klint
Stengårdsvej 8
4791 Borre
Denmark

There are no expensive toll bridges that you need to cross when travelling from Copenhagen to Møns Klint, so your main driving costs will be the rental car, fuel and parking.

If two or more of you are travelling together, I would definitely compare the price of renting a car against taking an organised tour. Having a car gives you much more freedom and also allows you to stop elsewhere on Møn.

Parking at Møns Klint

The easiest place to park is the large car park directly beside GeoCenter Møns Klint.

Parking currently costs DKK 45.

Your number plate is automatically registered when you enter the car park. Before leaving, you need to pay either by scanning one of the QR codes around the parking area or by using the parking machine outside the main entrance.

Do not simply drive out without paying because your vehicle has already been registered on entry.

The good thing about parking here is that you are immediately beside the GeoCenter, Dronningestolen viewpoint, the main staircases and the start of several hiking routes.

Getting to Møns Klint by Public Transport

It is possible to reach Møns Klint entirely by public transport, although it takes considerably longer than driving.

From Copenhagen, first take a train south to Vordingborg Station.

From Vordingborg, bus 660R runs towards Stege, the main town on Møn. Bus 664 also connects Vordingborg and Stege on some services. Current routes and connections can be checked through Rejseplanen, Denmark’s official public transport journey planner.

Once you reach Stege, getting to the cliffs is much easier during the main tourist season.

Between 29 March and 31 October 2026, bus 678 runs directly from Stege to GeoCenter Møns Klint. The service currently runs five trips per day in each direction during its operating period.

Your journey therefore looks something like this:

Copenhagen → Vordingborg by train → Stege by bus → Møns Klint on bus 678

The downside is the amount of travelling involved. Depending on how the connections line up, getting from Copenhagen to Møns Klint can take roughly three hours each way.

It is completely possible as a day trip, but you need to leave Copenhagen early and pay attention to the final bus back towards Stege.

Outside the period when bus 678 operates, things become more complicated.

Bus 667 runs from Stege to Magleby throughout the year, but from Magleby you still have approximately 5.5 km left to reach Møns Klint. You would either need to walk, cycle or arrange alternative transport for the final section. Bicycles can also be brought on the bus.

For this reason, I would only recommend public transport if you are visiting while bus 678 is operating. Outside that period, renting a car is significantly easier.

Organised Tours to Møns Klint From Copenhagen

If you do not want to rent a car or spend several hours navigating public transport, the other option is taking an organised day trip.

There are tours leaving from central Copenhagen which combine Møns Klint and the Forest Tower at Camp Adventure.

The day trip currently promoted by GeoCenter Møns Klint lasts around 8 hours 30 minutes. It starts in Copenhagen, visits the Forest Tower, stops around Dronning Alexandrines Bridge and then continues to Møns Klint.

You get approximately 2 hours 45 minutes at Møns Klint before travelling back to Copenhagen. Transport, an English-speaking guide and entrance to GeoCenter Møns Klint are included, although admission to the Forest Tower is separate.

The main disadvantage is obviously that you have less freedom.

Around three hours is enough to visit the main viewpoints and walk down towards the beach, but it does not leave much time for one of the longer hikes.

For solo travellers, a tour can make sense. If there are two or more of you, I would compare the tour price against renting a car for the day. Here are some options which visit Mons Klint from Copenhagen.

Best Things to See at Møns Klint

You do not need to complete a long hike to enjoy Møns Klint. Some of the best viewpoints are relatively close to the GeoCenter. We did the shortest hike and I felt we saw the best points personally. The strenuous bit of the hike would definitely be to go down to the beachside. There are viewpoints along the way but beach side offers something different, you just have to work for it.

Dronningestolen

One of the first places I would visit is Dronningestolen, or the Queen’s Chair. At around 128 metres above the Baltic Sea, this is the highest section of Møns Klint and one of the most impressive viewpoints. It is 300 meters to the left of the geo centre.

You get the classic view of the white cliffs falling almost vertically towards the sea below, with the forest surrounding you from behind.

It is very close to the GeoCenter, so you do not need to complete a long hike just to get a good view. Unfortunately we skipped it, and did another route, round trip in which we saw other impressive viewpoints as well.

Walk Along the Cliff Edge – Our Route

One of the nicest parts of visiting Møns Klint is walking through Klinteskoven Forest along the top of the cliffs. The route that we ended up taking is going. The forest sometimes completely hides the sea before suddenly opening onto another viewpoint overlooking the coastline.

We walked south from the GeoCenter, and passed areas including Freuchens Pynt, Sandfaldet and Sommerspirspynten.

This is also the direction followed by the Fossil Route, which is probably the best trail for first-time visitors and the reason why we embarked on this route.

Walk Down to Møns Klint Beach

You should try to see Møns Klint from both above and below. I definitely recommend doing this.

Near the GeoCenter, Maglevandstrappen leads down towards the beach and contains almost 500 steps. It is not particularly difficult if you have a reasonable level of fitness, but remember that once you walk down, you eventually need to climb back up.

You can either go down and up from the same spot or if you follow the fossil route you walk beachside for around 600m before heading back up again and then heading back through the forest to end up at the geo center.

Once heading down there is a panaroma view to the left which I would definitely recommend as you can grab some nice photos here.

Standing on the pebble beach gives you a much better idea of just how large the cliffs actually are. You can also search for fossils among the stones, with the chalk containing remains from animals which lived in the sea here around 70 million years ago.

At the time of writing, the northern section of Maglevandstrappen remains closed, but you can still access the beach by taking the right-hand/southern branch where the staircase splits. You can go down here to see the panaroma view I talked about earlier.

Check the GeoCenter Møns Klint website for the latest beach access information before your visit because cliff conditions can change. This is particularly important at Møns Klint because erosion and landslides are a natural part of the landscape.

Hiking Trails at Møns Klint

There are several routes around Møns Klint ranging from short walks to hikes that take most of the day.

Fossil Route

For a normal Møns Klint day trip, the Fossil Route is the trail I would recommend.

The official route is around 2.3 km and takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes, although I would allow closer to two hours if you want to stop regularly for photos and spend time on the beach. In fact it was much closer to the 2h mark ourselves as we took it slowly grabbed some photos and taking the scenery in.

You start from GeoCenter Møns Klint and walk south along the cliff-top trail. The route passes Freuchens Pynt, Sandfaldet and Sommerspirspynten before reaching Gråryg Fald, where you descend towards the beach.

From here, you walk back north along the coastline before eventually reaching Maglevandstrappen and climbing back towards the GeoCenter.

We did it the other way round and headed to the beach first and walked through the forest after. Either is fine.

There are a lot of stairs involved. The two staircases on the route contain 468 and 497 steps, so do not underestimate it just because the distance is short. The big advantage is that you experience Møns Klint from both the cliff top and the beach without needing to complete a long hike.

Fossil route stairs

Biodiversity Route

If you want something slightly longer, consider the Biodiversity Route. This is a new hiking route which opened in 2026 and covers approximately 6.1 km.

It starts and finishes at GeoCenter Møns Klint, beginning around Dronningestolen before following the cliff edge north.

The trail then heads deeper into Klinteskoven, passing forest clearings, old forest, unusual Ice Age landscapes and areas where you may see some of Møn’s orchids.

The official walking time is around two hours, although again I would allow longer if you want to take your time. You can view the route and map on the official Biodiversity Route page.

This is probably the best option if you want a proper walk without dedicating most of your day to hiking. However this does not take you beach side.

Klintekongens Rige

For serious hikers, there is Klintekongens Rige, translated as the Kingdom of the Cliff King.

This circular trail is approximately 14.5 km and takes around six hours to complete.

The route takes you through much more of the Høje Møn landscape, combining cliff views, forest and other areas around Møns Klint.

It is a great option if hiking is the main purpose of your visit or if you are staying overnight on Møn.

Personally, I would not choose it for a normal Copenhagen day trip. Six hours of hiking followed by a two-hour drive back to Copenhagen makes for a very long day.

Accessible Viewpoints at Møns Klint

Like I said in the beginning, you do not necessarily have to walk down hundreds of stairs to enjoy the scenery.

There are accessible areas and wooden walkways around the main GeoCenter section which allow visitors with reduced mobility, wheelchairs and pushchairs to reach viewpoints along the top of the cliffs.

The beach itself is much less accessible because of the staircase and rocky coastline.

If anyone in your group has limited mobility, I would stick to the GeoCenter area and cliff-top viewpoints rather than planning to descend towards the beach.

Should You Visit GeoCenter Møns Klint?

The GeoCenter is completely optional. You can see the cliffs, walk through the forest and complete the hiking routes without buying a GeoCenter ticket.

However, the centre can be worthwhile if you are interested in geology, travelling with children or get unlucky with the weather. The exhibitions explain how the cliffs were formed, the Ice Age landscape and the fossils found around Møns Klint.

For 2026, entrance costs DKK 155 for adults and DKK 100 for children aged 3–11. Children aged two and under enter free. Buying tickets online saves DKK 10 per person.

We skipped the GeoCenter as we were a bit tight for time and weren’t particularly interested in spending that much for a family of 4.

The GeoCenter is generally open from late March until the end of October, with opening hours changing depending on the season. It is closed during winter. Check the current GeoCenter prices and opening hours before visiting, especially if you are travelling outside summer.

How Long Do You Need at Møns Klint?

I would allow at least four hours at Møns Klint.

That gives you enough time to visit Dronningestolen, walk some of the cliff-top paths, descend towards the beach and complete the Fossil Route without rushing.

If you want to visit the GeoCenter as well, I would allow closer to five or six hours.

Anyone planning the Biodiversity Route should also give themselves most of the day.

What to Bring to Møns Klint

I would definitely bring proper trainers or walking shoes.

Some of the forest trails have exposed tree roots, while the wooden staircases and paths can become slippery after rain. There were some mud and we had to navigate around it during our walk.

Also bring water and some snacks, particularly if you are hiking beyond the main GeoCenter area.

A lightweight waterproof jacket is always useful in Denmark because the weather can change quickly.

If you plan on walking along the beach, remember that it is a mixture of sand and pebbles so plan accordingly, I still recommend good trainers to walk on.

Most importantly, stay on the marked paths around the cliff edge and follow any temporary closure signs. Møns Klint is an active geological landscape and sections of the cliffs can collapse naturally.

Best Time to Visit Møns Klint

The easiest time to visit Møns Klint is between late spring and early autumn.

June, July and August have the longest days and generally the best weather, although this is also when the cliffs are busiest.

May, September and early October can actually be better for hiking because temperatures are cooler and there are normally fewer visitors.

Autumn also looks particularly nice once the forest surrounding the white cliffs begins changing colour.

Winter visits are possible because the cliffs themselves do not close, but the GeoCenter closes for winter and public transport becomes considerably more difficult once seasonal bus 678 stops operating.

Weather is also more important here than at many other attractions. On a clear day, the contrast between the white cliffs, green forest and blue Baltic Sea is incredible. In heavy rain or thick cloud, the experience is obviously not quite the same

We visited in late September and the weather was cloudy so it was not as beautiful but the cliffs were still stunning just the same.

Is a Møns Klint Day Trip Worth It?

If you have several days in Copenhagen, I definitely think a Mons Klint day trip is worth considering.

It gives you something completely different from Copenhagen and is one of the best places in Denmark if you want proper natural scenery rather than another city, museum or castle.

It is also free if you have a car, bar the parking costs. That makes it a nice change from some of the other day trips from Copenhagen where entry fee and train rides rack up costs.

If you are heading further south along Denmark and nature interests you, then I definitely recommend the hidden gem of Maribo. Not a lot of people know about this but the lake and the quiet nature of this town is really worth visiting. Check out all the things to do in Maribo here and stay tuned for more Denmark posts!
