Berat is one of the easiest and most worthwhile day trips you can do in Albania. It is a historic and walkable city, but above all beautiful and affordable.
This city is known as the “City of a Thousand Windows” as Berat is famous for its white Ottoman houses stacked up the hillside, its old castle area, and the views across the Osum River. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage city, which makes it feel very different from Tirana, the Albanian Riviera, or the mountain towns further up north.
In this post I am going to highlight the best things to do in Berat in one day. I will also mention some other worthwhile spots you want to put on your radar if you wish to extend your stay here.

How to get to Berat
Berat is in central Albania and whether you are doing a trip visiting northern Albania or the Albanian riviera in the south it can be easily doable. You can also reach it from Durres, Vlore, Gjirokaster, or Saranda, but for the easiest Berat day trip, Tirana is the most practical starting point.
If your holiday is focused around the south of Albania then Berat can serve as a stopping point on your car journey back to Tirana. This is what we did but instead we kept going all the way up to Shkoder to visit Komani Lake.
If you are focusing on the beautiful nature of the Albanian alps, then maybe you can include Berat as a day trip from Tirana or if maybe you want to visit Lake Ohrid in Macedonia then you can include Berat as a stop on your way back to Tirana. It is a bit of a detour but it makes sense logistically.
Tirana to Berat by bus
The cheapest way to get to Berat from Tirana is by bus but in my opinion it is highly inconvenient. I do not trust public transport in Albania at all, they still have much to improve on. However the option is there if you want to be adventurous.
Buses usually leave from Tirana’s South and North Albania Bus Terminal, which is outside the city centre. Do not assume it leaves from Skanderbeg Square or somewhere central. You will need to take a taxi, local bus, or plan extra time to reach the terminal.
The journey normally takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and the service. Tickets are cheap, around 500 lek or around €6–€7 one way.
Once you arrive at Berat Bus Terminal, you are not directly in the old town. The terminal is around 3 km from the historic centre. From there, you can take a local bus, taxi, or walk if you do not mind starting your day with extra steps. I would personally take the local bus or a quick taxi and save the walking for the old town itself.
For tickets, and timings I would recommend checking out Gijrafa Travel Bus Timetables, a leading company in buses in the Balkans. I haven’t used them personally and there are some mixed reviews online, that’s why if possible I would recommend to rent a car in Albania and the Balkans in general.
Tirana to Berat by car
Driving from Tirana to Berat usually takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. This is the easiest option if you are doing an Albania road trip and want more flexibility.
The route is not too difficult compared to some of Albania’s mountain roads, but you should still allow extra time for traffic, parking, and slower sections. Berat itself is hilly around the old quarters and castle, so do not expect to park directly beside every attraction. We parked at an underground parking right outside Berat center, it was around 3 euro for 3-6 hours so it was very cheap.
Tirana to Berat by tour
If you cannot or don’t want to drive then the other option is to go on a guided tour and avoid dealing with buses and logistics. However it is not the cheapest way to visit Berat, some tours combine other places like Durres with Berat as well.

Can you visit Berat as a day trip?
Yes, Berat is easily doable as a day trip. However it is only for Berat and sightseeing in the main city of Berat. You will need to skip Osumi Canyon (more on this later) on a day trip. In fact I didn’t have time to visit the canyon as I didn’t stay overnight in Berat but if you are willing to extend your stay then there are plenty of things to do in Berat in which I’m going to go through below.
Things to do in Berat
These are the best things to do in Berat and appear in order of must visit and not in the order you should visit them logistically.
1) Visit Berat Castle
Berat Castle, also known as Kalaja, is the main attraction in Berat and exploring its grounds is definitely on of the best things to do in Berat. It sits high above the city and is not just a ruin you enter and take one photo. It is an inhabited castle area, with homes, guesthouses, churches, viewpoints, small shops, and cobbled lanes inside the walls.
It feels like a whole other neighbourhood inside the castle walls and there are plenty of roads and corners for you to explore
The walk up is very steep, especially in the summer heat. Please note that on google maps there is a point claiming a shortcut to the castle. The terrain is uneven on this so called shortcut so wear decent shoes. I wouldn’t recommend it as it is not much of a shortcut, you just enter from the side and get right next to the viewpoint but you miss out on the castle entrance and ambience. It isn’t really a shortcut as well in my opinion.
You can also take a taxi up if you want to save your legs, then walk down afterwards. If you are visiting in July or August, I would try to visit the castle early in the day or later in the afternoon. There is not much shade in parts of the castle area and the stone streets can feel very hot. Bring plenty of water with you as we visited in June and even during this time it was really hot and you can easily get dehydrated.
Entry is free and you’ll spend around 1.5-2 hours getting here and exploring.

2) Go to the Berat Castle viewpoint
The viewpoint inside Berat Castle is one of the best views in the city. This is where you get the classic look over Mangalem, Gorica, the river, and the surrounding mountains.
It is worth taking your time here because the view is really one to marvel at. You can see why the city is called the “City of a Thousand Windows” from above. The houses are packed together on the hillside, with rows of windows facing out over the valley. You will also have different vistas in every direction.

3) Visit the Onufri Iconographic Museum
Time needed: 45 minutes to 1 hour
Cost: Around 400 ALL for adults / audio guide extra
The Onufri Iconographic Museum is inside the castle area, so it is easy to visit while you are already up there.
Even if you are not usually a museum person, this one is worth considering because it is not massive and it gives you a better understanding of Berat’s religious and artistic history. The museum is housed in the Church of the Dormition of St Mary and displays religious icons, wood-carved details, and works connected to the famous Albanian icon painter Onufri.
4) Walk down into Mangalem
Mangalem is the postcard part of Berat. This is the old Ottoman neighbourhood on the hillside below the castle, and it is the area you will see in most photos of the city.
I spent some time here wandering aimlessly walking slowly and getting lost in the narrow streets. Every corner offers something different with views appearing between buildings and white houses.
This is also where Berat feels most like an open-air museum. You do not need to pay for anything to enjoy it. Just walk and take photos.
Mangalem is also a good area for lunch because you are close to traditional restaurants and the main riverside streets. If you are on a tight day trip schedule, do not spend a lot of time on lunch as you need to remember you have a drive home ahead of you.

5) Visit the National Ethnographic Museum
Time needed: 30 minutes
Cost: Around 300 ALL for adults
The Ethnographic Museum is another worthwhile stop if you want to understand traditional life in Berat. It is set in an old Ottoman-style house and shows how wealthy families lived, with displays of clothing, household items, tools, and craft traditions.
If you like seeing historic interiors, it is worth visiting. If you are short on time and already visited the Onufri Museum, you could skip this and spend more time walking outside instead.
For a day trip, I would not try to force both museums unless you genuinely enjoy museums. Berat’s real charm is in the streets, views, and neighbourhoods.
6) Cross Gorica Bridge
Gorica Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks in Berat. It connects Mangalem with Gorica on the opposite side of the river.
The bridge itself is not a worthwhile bridge but the views from it are amazing. You get to see both sides of the village of Berat and get different angles of the postcard views that Berat has to offer. Cross the bridge, take your photos, then continue into Gorica.

7) Explore Gorica Quarter
Gorica is quieter than Mangalem and feels slightly less polished. That is not a bad thing. It gives a different side of Berat and is a nice escape after the more visited streets below the castle.
This was historically the Christian quarter of Berat, while Mangalem was the Muslim quarter. Today, it is mostly a peaceful residential area with stone houses, small lanes, and views back across the river.
The main reason to visit Gorica is the view towards Mangalem. From this side, you can properly see the stacked Ottoman houses and the castle above them.
There are also a few local restaurants and guesthouses in Gorica, which makes it a good area if you want somewhere quieter to stay overnight.

8) Walk along Bulevardi Republika
Bulevardi Republika is the main pedestrian boulevard in Berat and a good place to slow down after exploring the old quarters.
This is where you see locals walking in the evening, families out together, people sitting in cafes, and the city feeling more lived-in rather than just historic. If you are staying overnight, this is a nice area to come back to after sunset for a relaxed drink or dinner.

9) See the King Mosque and Bachelors’ Mosque
Berat has several historic religious buildings, and two easy ones to include are the King Mosque and Bachelors’ Mosque.
The King Mosque is one of the older Ottoman-era mosques in the city and is close to the centre, so it is easy to pass while walking. The Bachelors’ Mosque is also worth noticing for its painted exterior and location near the lower part of Mangalem.
I did not enter either mosque but just watched and admired them from the outside.

10) Visit Osumi Canyon from Berat
Osumi Canyon is the best nature trip near Berat and one of the most impressive canyons in Albania. You will also see it written as Osum Canyon or Osumi Canyons. You will need a full day for this canyon alone and nearby attractions
The canyon is around 1.5 to 2 hours from Berat by car, depending on stops and road conditions. The main town nearby is Çorovodë, and many tours use this as the access point for canyon viewpoints, rafting, or canyoning.
This is where you need to be realistic. It is impossible to visit Osumi Canyon on a day trip to Berat. You will need to extend your stay. It is also only realistically accessible from Berat as the mountains preclude it to be accessible from anywhere else.
The best ways to visit Osumi Canyon are either:
- Book a guided canyon or rafting tour from Berat.
- Stay overnight in Berat, then visit the canyon the next day.
The road from Berat towards Osumi Canyon is generally paved on the main route, but it is still winding and narrow in places. Stick to the main road through Çorovodë and avoid random back roads unless you have a suitable vehicle and know what you are doing.
Personally I decided to visit Komani Canyon instead up in the North as in my opinion it looked slightly more impressive. However it is a question of opinion and Osumi is still worth checking out.
11) Add Bogovë Waterfall if visiting the canyon
Bogovë Waterfall is often combined with Osumi Canyon on day trips from Berat. It is a small but beautiful waterfall with a cold natural pool, and it makes sense to visit if you have a car or are on a tour.
Most tours include it but make sure to check out any itineraries or add it yourself as a self drive option.
The waterfall is located within Bogovë National Park. From the parking area near the water bottling plant, it’s about a 25 to 30-minute walk on a clearly marked trail through lush forest.
Accommodation Option
Berat is easy to visit as a day trip, but staying overnight is a good idea if your itinerary permits as you get to see those windows lighting up and the city getting quieter as people leave. It is also a must if you plan to visit Osumi Canyon
Best areas to stay in Berat
For most first-time visitors, I would stay in Mangalem, Gorica, or inside the castle area.
Mangalem is the best overall area if you want to be close to the main sights, restaurants, and the classic old town atmosphere. It is convenient, photogenic, and easy for a short stay.
Gorica is better if you want a quieter stay with views back towards Mangalem. It is still walkable, but it feels calmer and slightly more local.
The castle area is the most unique option. Staying inside or near Berat Castle sounds amazing, and it can be, but remember that it is uphill. It is great for atmosphere, but less convenient if you want to keep walking up and down for restaurants.
The modern centre is more practical than pretty. It can work if you find a good-value hotel, want easier parking, or do not want to deal with cobbled streets and steep hills.

Should you stay one or two nights?
One night is enough. Two nights is a bit of a drag as you can easily see all of Berat in one day. You can arrive from Tirana in the morning, explore stay for one night, head to Osumi Canyon the next day and then head back to Tirana.
For a budget Albania itinerary, I think one night in Berat is a very good use of time. It is not expensive compared to many European destinations, and it gives you a better experience than a rushed day trip.
Conclusion
Berat is one of the best day trips in Albania because it offers you something different. This UNESCO site gives you a hilltop castle, river views and the perched houses which is a unique sight.
Overall, Berat is absolutely worth visiting, whether you do it as a simple day trip or use it as a base for one night. It is affordable, beautiful, and easy enough to fit into most Albania itineraries without needing a big budget or complicated planning.
If you are doing an Albania trip then consider reading about all the best things to do in Tirana and a visit to Komani Canyon. Thanks for reading!
