Komani Lake was easily one of the most beautiful places I visited in Albania. The boat ride through the canyon feels completely different from the rest of the country. You have turquoise water, huge cliffs, mountain views, and then the Shala River at the end where you can swim, relax, eat, and hike to a viewpoint overlooking the canyon.
The important thing to understand is that Komani Lake is not a lake you visit just to look at once and the visit is over. The main experience is the boat ride from Koman Port through Komani Lake to Shala River. I must say that the photos and tiktoks doesn’t really do this place justice. In my opinion it even surpassed the famous Matka Canyon near Skopje
In this post I try to explain how to visit Komani Lake and Shala River, what to expect from a guided tour through the canyon and how to get there.
How to Visit Komani Lake
The easiest way by far to experience everything Komani Lake has to offer is by booking a tour. This is what we opted to do and you have options on pickup points or drive yourself to Koman Port and only pay for the boat ticket. Seeing that we already had a car rental, we drove there ourselves.
I personally did the boat option from Koman Port through GetYourGuide. The tour included the return boat ticket from Koman to Shala River, an English-speaking host on the boat, the panoramic ride through Komani Lake, and free time at Shala River. Lunch, sunbeds, parking, and extra activities were not included.
The general route of the boat ride takes around 60 to 70 minutes each way. You are not just using it as transport. The ride is basically one of the highlights if not the main highlight. The canyon views start quite quickly and the scenery gets better as you move deeper into the lake.
At Shala River, you normally get around 3 to 4 hours of free time depending on your tour. This is enough to swim, have lunch, take photos, relax by the river, and do the short viewpoint hike if you want.
Komani Lake Ferry vs Shala River Boat Tour
This is where people get confused.
There is a regular Komani Lake ferry that goes from Koman to Fierza. This is mainly used by people continuing towards Valbona or doing the Albanian Alps route. It is a scenic ferry, but it is not the same as the Shala River day trip.
If your goal is the turquoise water, swimming spots, beach area, and canyon photos, you want a Komani Lake and Shala River boat tour.
If your goal is to continue towards Valbona, then you need the Koman to Fierza ferry. For a simple and relaxing day trip, book the Shala River boat tour.

How to Visit Komani Lake From Shkoder
Shkoder is the best base for visiting Komani Lake. It is much closer than Tirana and makes the day feel far less long and tiring. I started the day in Shkoder but then after the tour ended we commuted to Tirana for our final day and I can say it feels much less tiring to gain an extra hour of sleep in the morning.
Most tours from Shkoder start early in the morning, usually around 6:30am to 7:30am. The drive to Koman Port normally takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road conditions, traffic, and stops.
You may find warning signs on road conditions in your tour information. At the time of writing and when visiting road works were almost finished and it was almost perfect for driving. This will significantly reduce the 2 hour timing as you won’t have to slow down as much. Further on I will give more tips on the road conditions and time you need to allow to do this tour.
Overall I would try and go to Komani Lake from Shkoder. You still need to wake up early, but it is manageable. If you are already planning to visit Theth, Valbona, or northern Albania, then staying in Shkoder before this tour makes the most sense.
Prices vary depending on whether you book just the boat ticket or a full package with transport. Boat-only tickets from Koman are by far the cheapest option, and if you already have a rental car which is common in Albania then definitely don’t pay extra for the transport.
Driving Yourself from Shkoder
You can drive yourself from Shkoder to Koman Port, but you need to leave some buffer time and plan carefully. Even though the road has improved in parts, it is still a mountain road with bends, narrow sections, and slow-moving traffic.
If your boat leaves at 10:00am, do not aim to arrive at 9:55am. First of all parking is a bit of a nuisance as it is a 15 minute walk away. Furthermore allow some time for traffic as you may find coaches on the route and it is not easy to overtake.
Parking is usually available near the tunnel before the port, but it is normally run by local owners and costs around €5 to €10. Bring cash. Once you park sometimes parkers offer you to send you off in a bus, but we didn’t encounter this.
If not, the walk is 15 minutes and is down a tunnel. Walk carefully along the side of the tunnel as there will be cars coming in through both ways in a one way tunnel.

How to Visit Komani Lake From Tirana
Most Tirana tours start extremely early, often around 5:00am to 6:00am. You then drive north towards Koman Port, usually with a coffee or toilet stop on the way. The drive can take around 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic, pickup points, and the road.
After that, you still have the boat ride, free time at Shala River, the return boat, and then the long drive back to Tirana.
This is doable, but only book it if you are fine with a long travel day. If you have limited time in Albania and Tirana is your only base, then it can still be worth it. The scenery is genuinely special and it is one of the best nature day trips you can do from Tirana.
However, if your itinerary is flexible, I would rather spend the night in Shkoder and do the tour from there. It makes the whole experience more relaxed.

Komani Lake Tour Guide Overview
Now that you overall know how to visit Komani Lake it is time to dive into the details of the actual tour and what to expect.
What the Tour Is Actually Like
The day is mainly split into three parts: the road journey, the boat ride, and the free time at Shala River.
The road journey gets you to Koman Port. From there, you board the boat and pass through the narrow canyon-like sections of Komani Lake. This is where you get the dramatic mountain scenery and the deep blue water.
Once you arrive at Shala River, the boat stops near the restaurants and riverside area. This is where you can swim, rent a sunbed, have lunch, take photos, go kayaking, or hike up to the viewpoint.
Road Conditions to Komani Lake
A lot of older blog posts and forum comments make the road to Komani Lake sound terrible. This is because it was true that for years, the road to Koman was disaster.
From my recent visit, the road was better than I expected and we ended up arriving early. It has significantly improved and we saw workers still working on it, so much so that we could smell strong smells of freshly coated tarmac. That does not mean it is a perfect highway, but it is no longer something I would panic and think way ahead before time to go to the starting point of the tour.
Also the journey there has some nice views in of its own right

What to Bring
Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, water, cash, and water shoes if you have them. The river area is rocky, so water shoes are useful.
You should also bring a change of clothes if you plan to swim. The water is cold, and sitting in wet clothes on the boat back is not ideal.
Cash is important because not everything is included. Lunch, drinks, sunbeds, parking, and kayak rental may cost extra depending on your tour.
I would also wear decent shoes if you want to hike to the viewpoint. Flip-flops are fine for the beach area, but not for the hill.
Best Time to Visit Komani Lake
The best time to visit Komani Lake is from late spring to early autumn. May, June, September, and early October are probably the best months because the weather is warm but not as intense as peak summer.
July and August are the busiest months. The water looks amazing and swimming is refreshing, but expect more people, more boats, and more demand for tours.
If you visit early or late in the season, check that boat tours are running and that the weather is suitable. Rain can make the day less enjoyable because most of the experience is outdoors.
Swimming in the Canyon
Swimming is one of the main reasons to visit Komani Lake and Shala River in summer.
The water is incredibly clear and looks very inviting, but it is cold. Really cold. Even on a hot day, the water can feel like a shock when you first get in. Go in slowly rather than jumping straight away, especially if you are not used to cold mountain water. I only went in waist height didn’t even wet my swimsuit.
The best swimming area is usually around Shala River where the boats stop. There are pebbly riverbanks, restaurants, sunbeds, and places where you can enter the water.
You can swim for free if you do not use a sunbed, but if you want a more comfortable spot, expect to pay extra for sunbeds. Prices can vary, so ask before sitting down.
Water shoes are useful because the ground is rocky. It is not a soft sandy beach. You can walk in barefoot, but it is not the most comfortable.
There are also kayaks and sometimes other small activities available, but these are normally not included in the standard boat ticket. If you want to kayak, bring extra cash.

Hiking to the Top for a Viewpoint
One thing I would definitely recommend doing at Shala River is the short hike up to the viewpoint. We did this first once we arrived and it was worth it before cooling off in the river.
This is usually called the Shala River balcony or viewpoint hike. It is not a full mountain hike, but it is steep enough to feel like a workout, especially in the heat. Expect around 30 minutes depending on your pace.
The view from the top is worth it. You get to look down at the turquoise river, the beach area, the boats, and the mountains around you. It gives a completely different perspective from the boat ride.
I suggest to wear proper shoes if you want to do this. I hiked in slides and even though it was manageable sometimes the terrain was slippery so it wasn’t ideal.

Accommodation Option
Most people visit Komani Lake as a day trip, but staying overnight is a really interesting option if you want a more unique experience.
You can stay near Koman, on Komani Lake, or around Shala River. Accommodation is usually in guesthouses, simple riverside stays, eco lodges, or small villas. Do not expect luxury resort standards everywhere. The appeal is the location, not polished hotel service.
The biggest benefit of staying overnight is that you get to enjoy the area after the day trippers leave. During the middle of the day, Shala River can get busy with boats, music, restaurants, and people taking photos. In the evening and early morning, it should feel much more peaceful.
Some accommodation options around the area include places like Riverside Komani Lake, Livadhi Guesthouse, Guesthouse Zgiboza, Bee Eco Guest House, Te Konaku, and Agroturizem Hotel Vila Franceze. Prices vary a lot depending on the season, room type, and how early you book.
It is also worth noting that there was limited reception here so make sure that if you are going to stay here choose lodging with wifi.
For most travellers, I would still say Shkoder is the most practical base. But if you love quiet nature stays and want to see Shala River without the day trip rush, staying overnight is worth considering.

Conclusion
Komani Lake is one of those places in Albania that actually lives up to the photos. The boat ride through the canyon is really beautiful and I have been to many canyons recently including the Matka Canyon in Macedonia and Sumidero Canyon in Mexico. It is difficult to compare but it competes with both of them.
It is a bit more out of the way but it is close enough that even if you are only visiting the Albanian Riviera it is worth detouring and going up north for just a day to experience some of the nature northern Albania has to offer.
