Whether you are setting Ljubljana as your base to visit Slovenia’s beautiful nature or just passing through on your way up north to the Julian Alps, it is still worth to spend one day in the Slovenian capital. Here is some of the best things to do in Ljubljana.
Best Things to do in Ljubljana
Ljubljana Castle
Without a doubt, this clifftop castle is the main attraction of this city making it one of the best things to do in Ljubljana blending history with stunning views over the city. There are two ways to reach the castle either by foot or by funicular.
While a ticket for the funicular ride is relatively cheap (€6 for a round trip) the queues tend to get really long as the day goes by especially during peak season. Having said this try and go early as possible, or be prepared to wait around 45 minutes to an hour. The alternative is a 20 minute uphill climb.
If you decide to walk it up and down, then the castle grounds are free, making a visit to Ljubljana Castle without spending a penny. Alternatively here is a list of the pricing options and you can buy your tickets here or at the site.
Once at the top, the panoramic views from the castle’s tower are simply breathtaking. On a clear day, you can see the city’s charming streets and the beautiful countryside beyond. After soaking in the views, you might enjoy a meal at the castle’s restaurant or catch one of the many cultural events held there.
Triple Bridge
The Triple Bridge (Tromostovje) in Ljubljana, designed by Jože Plečnik and completed between 1929 and 1932, consists of three parallel bridges.
The purpose was to handle heavy loads of traffic, then they pedestrianized the two adjacent bridges leaving the central one for handling traffic. This however changed as plans to pedestrianize the central part of the city materialized making all three bridges pedestrians. This created a scenic and spatious crossing over the Ljubljanica River making it an ideal spot to capture your photos.
Preseren square is the gateway between modern Ljubljana and the old town and it is the definiton of the capital’s identity. It makes the Triple Bridge stand out even more!
Central Market
A visit to the central market is definitely one of the best things to do in Ljubljana. It is a bustling place capturing the heart of the city and the life of the locals.
Here, you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, and traditional Slovenian goods like honey, pastries, and cured meats. It’s a great place to enjoy local flavors and soak up the lively atmosphere of the city.
Dragon Bridge
After you finish your visit to Ljubljana Castle, head straight, go past the market and you will find The Dragon Bridge. This is an iconic symbol of Ljubljana, renowned for its four striking dragon statues, it represents power and protection.
Tivoli Park
After exploring the vibrant city head to Tivoli Park (Tivolski Park). This is the best place in Ljubljana to retreat and relax. The park features wide lawns, vibrant flowerbeds, and scenic walking paths. At its center is a large pond with ducks, providing a serene spot to relax. There are also sports facilities like tennis courts, a running track, and a charming pavilion including a children’s playground.
In addition, Tivoli Mansion, located within the park, houses the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC) and a cozy cafe. With its diverse amenities, the park is ideal for leisurely strolls, picnics, and various outdoor activities.
River Cruise on the Ljubljanica River
Finally, head to the river banks to cruise along the Ljubljanica River seeing the iconic sights from a different perspective, making this one of the best things to do in Ljubljana.
As you glide along the river, you’ll pass the likes of the Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, and the picturesque embankments of the old town.
Tickets typically range from €8 to €12 for a 45-minute to 1-hour cruise, making it an affordable and enjoyable addition to any trip to Ljubljana.
